Eiko & Koma
In 1976 Irene and Paul Oppenheim introduced me to Eiko and Koma, two amazingly beautiful movement artists from Japan. They needed lighting for San Francisco shows and I became their lighting designer in California. We've shared a wonderful artistic collaboration throughout the years. Good memories; I recall in 1979, quite pregnant with my first child, pouring white flour on the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art floor to define their performance space, as the audience watched and commented. In 2001 a great opportunity arose to work as their lighting designer for "Be With", their collaboration with Anna Halprin and Joan Jeanrenaud. We performed at the Joyce in NYC, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco. I received an Isadora Duncan Dance award for "Be With" in San Francisco. In the summer of 2002 I traveled to Tokyo with Eiko and Koma to light their works "Snow" and "Night Tide" at the Japan Arts Dance Event International Dance Festival. Thank you, Irene and Paul!
